3M Spray Mount vs Display Mount vs Photo Mount — Which Do You Need?
Three spray cans, similar sizes, similar packaging — and three very different products. If you've ever stood in front of a shelf of 3M spray adhesives wondering which one to reach for, this guide is for you. Display Mount — maximum strength, permanent, for work that has to stay.
Photo Mount — permanent and pH neutral, for photographs and precious prints.
3M Spray Mount — the everyday studio adhesive
Spray Mount creates a repositionable bond that stays tacky for up to 12 hours after application. You spray it onto the back of your material, allow 30 seconds for the solvent to flash off, then position your work. If you need to adjust, peel it away and reposition — it won't leave residue on most surfaces and won't tear lightweight paper.
This makes Spray Mount the go-to for:
- Mock-ups, paste-ups, and layout work where you need to reposition during the design process
- Development drawings and overlay work
- Temporary display boards that will be dismantled
- Presentation boards where items may need adjusting before sign-off
- Any situation where flexibility matters more than permanence
Available in 200ml (single and case of 12) and 400ml (single and case of 12). The 400ml is the better value for regular studio use. The 200ml is useful for travelling light or keeping on a desk.
3M Display Mount — when it absolutely has to hold
Display Mount is a high-strength permanent adhesive that creates an instant, aggressive bond. Unlike Spray Mount, there is no repositioning window — once it's down, it's down. The bond strength is significantly higher than Spray Mount, making it the right choice when the work needs to withstand handling, humidity, or time.
Display Mount is the choice for:
- Exhibition boards and gallery displays that will be viewed, handled, and transported
- Permanent signage and large-format mounted prints
- Mounting heavyweight materials including thick card, foam board, and board substrates
- Any mounting job where failure is not an option

3M Photo Mount — for photographs and archival work
Photo Mount is a pH neutral, acid-free adhesive specifically formulated for mounting photographs, fine art prints, and any printed material where long-term preservation matters. Standard spray adhesives — including Spray Mount — contain compounds that can, over time, cause yellowing, migration, and degradation of photographic paper and inkjet prints. Photo Mount is formulated to avoid this.
Photo Mount is the choice for:
- Mounting photographs for framing, display, or portfolios
- Mounting inkjet and giclée prints where archival quality is important
- Fine art reproduction work
- Presentation portfolios where the prints need to look their best for years, not months
Photo Mount creates a permanent, high-strength bond. It is not repositionable. Available in 400ml single and case of 12.
Which one should you keep in stock?
For most design studios, the answer is Spray Mount as the daily workhorse — and Display Mount for exhibition or presentation jobs where permanence matters. If you regularly mount photographs or fine art prints, add Photo Mount as a third option.
If you only buy one: Spray Mount. It covers 80% of studio adhesive needs and the repositionable nature means fewer mistakes and wasted materials.
A note on working safely
All three products contain solvents. Always work in a well-ventilated space. Use a spray booth if you're using them frequently — we stock Simair and BenchVent spray booths that filter solvent fumes efficiently. Never spray near a naked flame.
