Drawing Board Buying Guide — How to Choose the Right Board
Whether you are an architecture student buying your first drawing board or a professional designer upgrading your studio setup, choosing the right drawing board makes a real difference to the quality and comfort of your work. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What is a Parallel Motion Drawing Board?
A parallel motion drawing board has a straightedge that stays perfectly horizontal at all times as you move it up and down the board, guided by a wire and pulley system. This means you can draw accurate parallel horizontal lines anywhere on the board without ever needing to realign the straightedge — which is the fundamental requirement of technical drawing and architectural work.
Most parallel motion boards also have a rotating head on the straightedge, allowing you to lock the rule at a specific angle for consistent diagonal lines. The quality of the parallel motion mechanism — particularly the pulley wheels — has a significant effect on how smooth and precise the movement is. Boards with steel roller bearing pulleys, such as the Orchard Priory, give a noticeably smoother action than those with plastic pulleys.
Drawing Board Size Guide
Choose your board size based on the largest paper size you regularly work with:
- A4 board — compact and portable. The Aristo Geo-Board is the standout A4 option, including a parallel straight edge, magnetic clamping rail and rapid set square.
- A3 board — a good entry-level choice for students who primarily work at A3. The Rotring College Board and Rapid Board are both reliable A3 options.
- A2 board — the most popular all-round size, large enough for most technical drawing work but compact enough for a standard desk. Available from GraphicPro, Rotring and Orchard.
- A1 board — the professional standard for architects and engineers working on large-scale drawings. Available from GraphicPro and Orchard.
- A0 drafting table — for professionals needing a full freestanding drafting station. The Denby Mutoh is available in both A1 and A0 with a precision Mutoh drafting head included.
Drawing Board vs Drafting Machine vs Drafting Table
A drawing board sits on your existing desk and has a parallel motion straightedge adjustable to different angles via a backstand. This is the right choice for most students and design professionals.
A drafting machine mounts a precision drafting head via a parallelogram arm, providing both horizontal and vertical scales that can be rotated simultaneously to any angle. The Rotring A2 board includes a drafting head as standard.
A drafting table is freestanding with its own legs and height adjustment. The Denby Mutoh combines a quality adjustable table with a Mutoh drafting head — the complete professional setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do architecture students still need a drawing board?
Yes — most UK architecture schools still require students to have a drawing board for manual drawing, particularly in first year. Even in predominantly CAD-based programmes, manual drawing is taught as a fundamental skill that develops spatial reasoning, proportion and scale understanding. The GraphicPro A2 or A1 is the most commonly specified option. Check your course requirements and contact us on 01423 359 730 — we work closely with UK architecture schools and can often advise on exactly what your course specifies.
Can I buy drawing boards in bulk for a school or college?
Yes — we stock GraphicPro drawing boards in bulk packs and can supply schools and colleges at competitive pricing. Contact us on 01423 359 730 or email sales@graphicsdirect.co.uk for bulk pricing and availability.
Do you offer next-day delivery on drawing boards?
Yes — GraphicPro, Rotring and Aristo drawing boards are available for next-day delivery when ordered before 3.15pm Monday to Thursday. The Denby Mutoh drafting table ships direct from the manufacturer and is not available for next-day delivery.
