Foam Board Buying Guide — How to Choose the Right Foam Board

Foam board is one of those materials where quality makes a real and visible difference. This guide covers everything you need to choose the right board for your application — from thickness and format through to cutting, mounting and specialist alternatives.

What is Foam Board?

Foam board (also called foamcore or foam-centred board) consists of a lightweight polystyrene foam core sandwiched between two thin layers of paper or facing. It is used across the design, print, display, architecture and education industries for mounting prints, building exhibition graphics, making architectural models and creating presentation boards.

At Graphics Direct we supply foam board manufactured exclusively by Gilman Brothers — one of the world's most respected foam board producers. Gilman Brothers Insite foam board uses a clay-coated paper facing that provides a smooth, bright white surface with excellent ink adhesion and adhesive retention, unlike cheaper boards with plain uncoated paper facing that absorb adhesive unevenly.

Which Thickness Do I Need?

3mm Foam Board

The lightest option. Best for small prints, lightweight mounting and short-term display applications where weight matters. Not recommended for large-format prints as the thinner core can bow under the weight of the mounted material.

5mm Foam Board

The most popular all-round thickness and the one most professionals reach for first. Rigid enough for large prints and exhibition graphics, light enough to be practical for most display applications. Available in white, black and self-adhesive formats.

10mm Foam Board

Significantly more rigid than 5mm. Used for large-scale displays that need to stand unsupported, structural architectural models, and applications where the board will be handled repeatedly. Also the preferred thickness for display frames and box-mounted presentations.

Which Format — White, Black or Self-Adhesive?

White Foam Board

The standard choice for most applications. White board is used for mounting light-coloured prints, exhibition graphics and display panels. Available in 3mm, 5mm and 10mm from A3 to 8x4ft.

Black Foam Board

Black board is used where the edges of the mounted board will be visible and a white edge would look out of place — particularly for dark prints, photography and fine art mounting. Also preferred for shadow box displays and frames. Available in 5mm and 10mm.

Self-Adhesive Foam Board

The Gilman Brothers Insite Reveal has a peel-and-stick acrylic adhesive coating on one side. You peel back the release liner and press your print directly onto the board without spray adhesive — giving a cleaner, more consistent bond with no mess or fumes. Particularly useful for large prints where even spray coverage is difficult to achieve. Available in 5mm, from A3 to 8x4ft.

Specialist Foam Boards

Gatorfoam

A heavy-duty foam board with a wood-fibre veneer facing rather than paper. Significantly more rigid and durable than standard foam board — resists denting, warping and delamination. The preferred choice for permanent display installations, exhibition stands and applications where the board will be handled repeatedly. Can be routed, drilled and machined more cleanly than standard foam board.

Ryno Board

A high-density, high-performance 5mm board engineered for durability where standard foam board is not robust enough.

Acid-Free Foam Board

For conservation mounting of artwork, photography and documents where pH neutrality is essential to prevent long-term damage to the mounted material.

Oppboga Board

A fully recyclable foam board alternative — the sustainable choice for projects with environmental requirements. Trusted by the sign and display industry.

Foam Board vs Foamex — What is the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions we receive. Foam board (foamcore) has a polystyrene foam core with paper facing and is designed for indoor use only. It is not weather-resistant or UV-stable. Foamex is a rigid PVC-based board specifically engineered for outdoor signage — weatherproof, UV-stable and significantly more durable. If you need signage for outdoor use, you need Foamex, not foam board. If you are unsure which is right for your project, call us on 01423 359 730.

How to Cut Foam Board Cleanly

The key to clean cuts is a sharp blade and multiple light passes:

  • Use a fresh Swann Morton craft knife blade — replace it frequently, as a dull blade drags and tears the foam core
  • Score through the top facing with light pressure, then make two or three progressively deeper passes
  • Always use a steel safety ruler, never plastic
  • For repeated production cuts, a specialist foam board cutter such as the Cos-Tools range gives superior, consistent results

How to Mount a Print onto Foam Board

With spray adhesive: Apply an even coat of 3M Spray Mount or Display Mount to the back of the print. Allow 20–30 seconds for the adhesive to become tacky. Position carefully and smooth from the centre outward to eliminate air bubbles.

With self-adhesive foam board: Score the release liner across the centre. Peel back one half to expose the adhesive. Anchor the print at the centre and smooth outward before peeling the remaining liner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is foam board the same as mounting board?

No — mounting board (also called mount board or mat board) is a solid card product used for picture framing, typically 1.4mm to 3mm thick, made entirely from card without a foam core. Foam board has a foam core that makes it lightweight and rigid but not as dense as mounting board. The two products are used for different applications — mounting board for framing and fine art presentation, foam board for lightweight rigid display mounting.

What size foam board do I need for an A1 print?

You need at least an A1 board (594 x 841mm) to mount an A1 print flush. If you want a border around the print you will need a larger sheet — the next standard size up is A0 (841 x 1188mm). We stock foam board up to 8x4ft (2440 x 1220mm) for large-format applications.

Can foam board be used for architectural models?

Yes — foam board is one of the most widely used materials for architectural model making. 5mm white foam board is the standard choice for walls and floors. 10mm is used where greater structural rigidity is needed. Foam board cuts cleanly with a craft knife, takes PVA and UHU adhesive well, and can be painted or covered with other materials. For more demanding structural models, Gatorfoam gives greater rigidity and machines more cleanly.

What is the best adhesive for foam board models?

For model making, UHU All Purpose Adhesive or PVA glue are the standard choices. For mounting prints onto foam board, 3M Spray Mount (repositionable) or Display Mount (permanent) give the most professional results. Avoid solvent-based adhesives as they can dissolve the polystyrene foam core.

Do you supply foam board on trade accounts?

Yes — we supply printers, display companies, design studios and educational institutions on trade and account terms. Contact us on 01423 359 730 or email sales@graphicsdirect.co.uk to discuss your requirements and volume pricing.
